Rooks Con

What is Rooks Con?
Rooks Con is a passion project started by Rooks owners Lincoln Erickson and Cliff Flash. Rooks Con is an attempt. to once a year, during or around Memorial Day weekend in May, bring people who love games together for an unmatched gaming experience. Rooks Con is a plan to play and celebrate the love for all the games Rooks customers purchase and play throughout the year. With this goal in mind, Rooks Con will attempt to host the biggest events for MTG, Yu-Gi-Oh, Pokemon, Warhammer 40K, Conquest, D&D, Star Wars Unlimited, Lorcana, and of course Board Games in the state. So during Rooks Con each year, there should be something for everyone who enjoys games, how each of these event will run is a little different, see below for more information about what interests you.
Card Game Events- Magic, Yu-Gi-Oh, Lorcana, Star Wars Unlimited, Pokemon etc.
During Rooks Con each year we will look to host the biggest possible event for all card games that we sell and have a community for. These will be swiss style events with prizes for the top players. Prize distribution will be determined by player count, and event type will be added to our schedule around February each year. We will attempt to run cups, qualifiers, state championships, or whatever we can run to offer the best prizes and options for our players. The hope is to draw as many out of Bozeman players as possible to play with our local communities and create large events. Depending on the game, and expected turnout, card games will be 1 or 2 day events, most likely Saturday, or Saturday and Sunday.
Miniature Games- Warhammer 40K, Conquest, Star Wars Legion, AOS etc.
During Rooks Con each year we will look to host as big of an event for our Miniature game communities and players as possible. These will be swiss style events played over 1 or 2 days, most likely Saturday and Sunday for the games with larger expected turnouts, and Saturday for games with expected fields of 16 or fewer players. We expect Warhammer and Conquest to run 5 round events over 2 days, and most other games to run 3 rounds over 1 day. We will attempt to run qualifiers, world cups, or whatever biggest level event is available for these events. The hope is to run the biggest tournament in Montana for all of these games each year.
D&D and other RPG’s:
During Rooks Con each year, we will be hosting multiple D&D and other Roleplaying games events, these will be one shot adventures, or multiple day adventures, for players who sign up ahead of time and fill the slots. Our staff will be running the games, and have descriptions of their games on the schedule, for these events limited spots will be available for each time slot. We will run events over the course of the week leading up to, and on Memorial Day weekend so there should be plenty of options for players who wish to participate.
Board Games at Rooks Con:
The Board Games portion of Rooks Con is our staple event, it is a week of board game open play as well as tournaments. The board game portion of Rooks Con is the inspiration for our whole event. It is an attempt to once a year bring together all players who live, or who have lived and played board games at Rooks, back in one space for an unmatched experience. The general way the board game event works is as follows: There will always be an open gaming library available, as well as open play supported, we have a facebook page and discord available to our open gaming players who would like to schedule games with each other ahead of the event, or who are looking to make sure they can get something on the table. We also will have a board game event schedule that we will put on our website in February. This board game schedule will have DEMO’s, Heats, Continuous, Semi, and Final events. The Demo’s will be a time where all players can come and learn a game they are interested in learning the rules to, or learning more in depth how a game works. Heats are the bulk of the board game event, they are for all players, whether you are interested in winning the board game tournament for the chosen game, or you just want to try or play a game once, the heats are built for you to play the chosen game during the allotted time slot with other players. You DO NOT need to participate in heat 1 of a game to play in heat 2, all heats are available to all players who wish to participate.Heats will randomly create tables for players to play and enjoy the chosen game. Continuous events start at the stated time and will run until the event is completed and a winner is determined, for Continuous events you must sign up and be available to play at the start of the event, Continuous events cannot be jumped into late. Semi and Final events will be for those who are interested in competing to win final table coasters, Championship plaques, and Rooks Baubles. The person running a chosen game will have information on how you can qualify for the semi or final for that game. All players who make a final table for a board game win a prize and Baubles.
What are Baubles and how do they work?

Bauble are lifetime Rooks Con reward points. They are a way to track players who have succeeded in games at Rooks Con year to year. For our board game events at Rooks Con each year, baubles are always awarded to the top 4 players for every game where at least 3 or more players participated in the event, heats, continuous, or otherwise. The formula for how many baubles any game can earn you is as follows:

Baubles base System- 1st-6 baubles, 2nd-4 baubles, 3rd- 2 baubles, 4th- 1 bauble
Multipliers are based on game length and total players who played the game:
1-2 hour game- x1, 3 hour game- x2, 4+ hour game- x3
Player Count: 0-7 players- divide by 2, 8-16 players- x1, 17-31- x2, 32-64 players x3, 65+ players - x4
I want to win Baubles, plaques, and coasters, how do I do that?

For our Rooks Con board games, prizes are available for all games we run, not all games will work the same for who qualifies or wins the prizes but most of the games will have heats that anyone can play and participate in. Players who win a game during the heat will most likely qualify for the Semi or Final for that game. Qualifying for a Semi or Final DOES NOT mean you must attend the Semi or Final, it just opens the option to play for the prizes if you so desire. Some players who don’t win a game (get a 2nd, or multiple 3rds) may also qualify for the Semi or Final for that game based on how the person running that game decides they want to advance players. For most games the following system is used to advance players who wish to participate in Semi or Final events.

During Heats-
Each Win= 1000,each 2nd’s= 100, each 3rd’s= 10, each 4th’s= 1, 5th or further= 0.

Using this point system the person running the event will take players to their semi or Finals, taking the players with the most points who show up to the scheduled Semi or Final first and then working through players based on points until all slots are filled. If there are not enough players to fill a Semi,or players with 1 point are qualifying for a playoff spot, the person running the chosen game may determine it makes more sense to move straight from the heats to a Final and skip the Semi, or play a Final with a lower player count to better incorporate players who did better during the heats. Once at a final table that game will be played one more time and the person running the game will turn in a final table sheet with the players names and badge numbers, players will receive their coasters and Plaques at the conclusion of that final game, Baubles will be added to the players count within a couple months of the conclusion of Rooks Con.

Wow that’s neat, I feel passionately about a game or want to make sure it gets run at Rooks Con, how do I make that happen?
We are always looking for players who want to help us run games at Rooks Con, players running games is a big part of making Rooks Con a success. Because of that we allow our players to play in the games they are running, there are no restrictions for players who help us at the events, except you have to be available during the duration of the games you choose to run, whether you play that game or not. To help us run games at Rooks Con we will have a sheet you can fill out on the website from August-December. Simply fill out the sheet to sign up to run games and we will contact you with any follow up. Please don’t be afraid to sign up to run a game if you are thinking about it, this event is only possible because of the community that runs games at Rooks Con, and the only way to guarantee a game you love is incorporated at Rooks Con is to run it. It is worth noting that we really appreciate our players who run games for us at Rooks Con and will continually work to reward those players in as many ways as possible but at this time players who are running games DO need to buy a badge still to attend the event.
